We are happy to announce that Trivenikalyan Foundation, Mumbai has offered an annual grant of Rs. 100,000/ to the Forum on Contemporary Theory for a period of three years to encourage study and research in the area of General Semantics. As a topic for inter-disciplinary research General Semantics came into prominence with the publication of Alfred Korzybski’s book Science and Sanity: An Introduction to Non-Aristotelian Systems and General Semantics in 1933 and the founding of  the International Association of General Semantics in 1938.  As Korzybski maintained, General Semantics is not any philosophy, or psychology or logic, in the ordinary sense; “it is a new extensional discipline which explains and trains us how to use our nervous systems most efficiently.” The Forum will incorporate in its activities such a study and encourage research in this area. The grant will be utilized in adding to its library collection works on General Semantics and allied disciplines; in organizing workshops to train scholars in “the new extensional methods for application in personal adjustment”; in getting scholarly articles related to this field published in the Forum’s Journal; and in inviting experts to speak at the Centre for Contemporary Theory on the topic. The Forum gratefully acknowledges this contribution made by Balvantbhai Parekh, who has a special interest in this field of study.
